A familiar place to work
Access Windows or Linux desktops through the browser, with the agreed software, data and permissions ready for your team.
Give researchers and engineers a simpler way to work in the cloud. The Server Labs deploys, integrates and supports RES, connecting your people, applications and data to the compute they need.
From your first workspace to a supported production environment.

RES is an open-source portal for accessing research and engineering environments on AWS. We make it fit your organisation, so your team can focus on analysis, design and discovery.
Access Windows or Linux desktops through the browser, with the agreed software, data and permissions ready for your team.
Bring preparation, analysis and visualisation together. Connect to scalable HPC when a desktop alone cannot handle the workload.
Get help with deployment, integration and day-to-day operation, with clear responsibilities and a plan for what comes next.
Start with the help you need today. We can deliver alongside your team or manage the agreed RES installation, compute infrastructure and integrations.
A configured environment that your first team can use.
Connect the user experience to demanding compute workloads.
Ongoing care for your RES installation, compute infrastructure and agreed integrations.
Our role: the infrastructure behind your research. Our RES services focus on AWS workspace deployment, HPC integration and infrastructure operations. Where a project requires a Trusted Research Environment (TRE), we support the customer's chosen specialist platform through agreed infrastructure delivery and workload integration. Lifebit is one example of a specialist TRE platform.
Already running RES? We can review your installation, address integration or operational issues, and agree a transition into support.
A focused engagement to establish RES in your AWS environment and validate an agreed workflow. You leave with a usable starting point, trained users and a costed roadmap to production.
Scope your RES LaunchChoose the first team, application and workflow. Confirm identity, network access, data permissions, licensing and budget.
Set up the agreed projects, software stacks, access and storage. Include a PCS connection where HPC is part of the scope.
Validate access and reproducibility. Record the agreed measures, such as time to result and the cost of a representative run.
Provide training, configuration documentation, an operational runbook and a costed production roadmap with clear ownership.
RES is the place your researchers and engineers access their work. UltraCompute is TSL's wider HPC offering, built around AWS Parallel Computing Service (PCS).
We connect the layers: applications, identity, storage, scheduling and operations. A RES Linux desktop can become a PCS login node, allowing users to submit Slurm jobs and work with their results from the same environment.
Start with RES desktops when that meets the need. Add the HPC capacity and integrations your workload requires.

Illustrative service architecture. The configuration, service availability and regional fit are validated for each engagement.
For research and engineering teams across disciplines whose applications, datasets and compute requirements need more than a standard workstation.
Support research across disciplines, from space and climate science to computational modelling, with workspaces, scientific applications and scalable compute.
Bring engineering applications, simulation preparation and results visualisation together, with access to HPC for larger runs.
Deliver compute infrastructure and workload integration supporting the customer's chosen research platform, with scope and responsibilities agreed for each deployment.
We can add suitable development tools and connect GPU workloads or model services where required. Model deployment, evaluation and inference serving are scoped separately around your workflow.
Our RES offer draws on experience in cloud HPC, scientific data and demanding production environments.

Yes. We start with a review of your version, configuration, integrations and operational needs. We then agree any remediation, support boundaries and a transition plan.
No. RES can provide virtual desktops without PCS. For workloads that need HPC, we can connect RES to UltraCompute using AWS PCS. Other compute integrations can be assessed against your requirements.
The service can cover RES administration, monitoring, incidents, planned upgrades, software images and agreed integrations. Support hours, response targets, backup and recovery responsibilities, and application coverage are defined in the service agreement. AWS service issues follow the agreed AWS Support escalation route.
RES itself is open source and available at no additional software charge from AWS. You pay for the AWS resources it uses, any third-party licences, and TSL's agreed deployment, integration or support services. We provide a scoped proposal and running-cost assumptions before work begins.
RES provides technical computing workspaces; a RES deployment does not itself constitute a complete Trusted Research Environment (TRE). Where a TRE is required, our role is to deliver the agreed compute infrastructure and integrations within the customer's selected specialist platform architecture. The specialist provider owns its TRE product and roadmap; research governance and data-access decisions remain with the accountable customer and data custodians.
We configure infrastructure controls such as identity, network isolation and logging against agreed requirements. Compliance and sovereignty depend on the complete architecture and operating model.
A target team and workload, your main obstacle, and an outline of your AWS environment, identity setup, applications and data. We will help define a practical starting point and the prerequisites for delivery.
